Sustainability

At More Joy we only design and produce durable and high-quality utility products that can replace disposable and environmentally harmful items used in your everyday life.

More Joy's ABCs of Sustainability:

Our designs are timeless, as we aim to extend the lifespan of our products by making them ones that bring joy to everyday life in as many ways and for as long as possible. All the products we manufacture are either recyclable or 100% biodegradable. We do not want to burden nature, but rather support its diversity.

Chamber of Commerce: We are members of the Helsinki and Tampere Chambers of Commerce in Finland.

Certificates: Our sustainability efforts and their continuous development are based on certificates, as we want to be verifiably responsible and share all information about our operations openly:

We have the EcoCompass certificate since 2022.

The ISO 14001 standard is the world’s most recognized environmental management system. It defines the resources, processes, and methods that enable us to meet our environmental goals and continuously improve our level of environmental protection. The standard is based on the PDCA model (plan-do-check-act), which involves comprehensive planning, management, measurement, and improvement of operations. Our operations already meet all ISO 14001 criteria, and the documentation process is underway in 2024.

Corporate governance is a governance system through which our company is managed and supervised in a manner that takes into account the interests of our stakeholders.

Design: We only design sustainable and high-quality everyday products that can replace disposable and environmentally harmful commodities on the market.

Design from Finland:  We have had the Design from Finland mark indicating the origin of Finnish design in our company. However, we discontinued it in 2024 because we also have several international designers and artists. The majority of our products are still designed and all are still manufactured in Finland!

E-Commerce. More Joy is a domestic online store operating in Finland. The entire logistics of the online store, from production to delivery, is located at a single address. The online store saves many resources compared to brick-and-mortar stores and operates globally from one point. All deliveries are transported directly from the factory to the customer without intermediaries.

Education: We offer our employees vocational training through apprenticeships and support continuous development through adult education. For several years, we have also supported the education of girls in developing countries in collaboration with Plan International. This way, we have contributed to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) program in our own way.

Energy: All electricity is produced using green energy. Heating is purchased directly from the neighboring farm using wood chip heating. The heat emitted by the textile finishing machine also reduces the need for heating.

Fairness and Equality: We promote fairness and equality among our employees, customers, and partners. Our practices are based on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGP). Employee learning and training are supported by providing vocational training through apprenticeships and/or supplementary adult education.

  • Work safety and ergonomics are taken into account in the work environment in the best possible way tailored to each employee. Employees are always actively involved in developing their own work environment.
  • Our wages exceed union recommendations. Employees have the opportunity to receive an annual bonus and a share of the company’s positive results.

IPR Intellectual Property Rights: We ensure industrial and intellectual property rights protection by patenting our designs and inventions internationally. We also require our partners and customers to comply with IPR regulations.

The (Finnish) Key Flag symbol Our products hold the Key Flag symbol of Finnish work, meaning they are manufactured in Parkano at our own factory with domestic labor. The Key Flag symbol is awarded to a company when at least 80% of the following aspects are of domestic origin: raw materials, supplies, parts and semi-finished products, packaging materials and supplies, variable and fixed personnel costs, subcontracting, marketing costs, product development costs, depreciation and interest, and other indirect costs.

Logistics: We have centralized our logistical procurement with responsible operators who offer low-emission transport modes and/or, for example, offset the emissions caused by air freight. Purchases are always made in larger single shipments with fewer deliveries. This minimizes the burden of distribution and ensures that freight space, such as full pallet loads, is used completely. We handle daily domestic shipments, such as e-commerce deliveries, ourselves alongside our daily commute to larger transport units. International courier pickups are consolidated to one day per week instead of collecting small individual shipments daily.

Materials: Through our material choices, we reduce the environmental impact of our supply chain. We are committed to increasing the proportion of, for example, less emission-intensive materials in our products. All materials have a long lifecycle and are fully recyclable or biodegradable.

Multiculturalism: Different people and cultures are an asset to us! We promote a culture in the workplace where the diversity of employees is valued, including aspects such as age, gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, family situation, disability, language, religion, belief, and educational background. We have partners in over 30 countries and constantly collaborate with international students and educational institutions.

Packaging: All the packaging materials we use are recyclable. All cardboard and paper purchased for packaging are made from either recycled materials or FSC- or PEFC-certified materials. We use plastic only in large shipments from importers where moisture presents challenges.

Return forms are not printed for online orders, as the return rate is annually well below 1%. We provide the return form electronically to the customer, thereby reducing unnecessary paper and label materials that would otherwise go unused.

Paperless: Our office is almost paperless. Communication, billing, and documentation with customers and partners are always handled electronically. We do not print thank you cards or return forms for online orders: the thank you card is replaced by a reusable kitchen cloth, and the return form is sent electronically to the customer if needed, as our return rate is less than 1% annually.

Partnership Programs:

Our corporate partnership with WWF supports biodiversity. The goal is to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2030. 80% of our annual donation is directly allocated to nature conservation needs, 20% of it is used for reporting, administration, and fundraising.

By supporting the Finnish Association for Nature Conservation, we protect Finnish nature and its unique features. Conservation of various species and prevention of extinction is one of the main tasks.

We produce various collaborative products for the National Gallery of Finland, and from the international sales of these products, we share royalty income to support the museum’s operations.

STF Sustainable Travel Finland is a sustainable tourism program that we are currently developing at our factory outlet in Parkano, Finland.

Storage: We strive to maintain and produce the smallest possible finished goods inventory. We can influence the turnover of products, and outdated designs are sold to customers at a discount. This way, all stocked products have the longest possible lifecycle, as considered in the design phase. Our warehouse is located next to the production hall, and the packing area is connected to the warehouse, minimizing unnecessary use of logistical resources. Storage is managed with an electric forklift and manually.

Textile Waste: We do not produce any textile waste because we order all materials pre-cut to the correct dimensions. This way, we do not unnecessarily consume logistical resources or move waste needlessly from one place to another.

Waste Management: We have our own waste management program where we closely monitor waste quantities sorted into various categories. All our waste is 100% recyclable or fully biodegradable. We adhere to European legislation and directives.

Water Usage: We are continuously reducing water usage by opting for entirely water-free production methods and investing in new printing equipment. We will phase out screen printing by the end of 2025, after which our printing operations will be completely water-free. Our production uses spring water sourced from our own well.

A significant portion of the greenhouse gas emissions from textiles over their lifecycle comes from washing and maintenance. We aim to support consumer behavior that reduces emissions in our value chain. Therefore, we strive to improve the maintainability and repairability of our products, provide material-specific care instructions in our care guide, and expand the range of lifecycle services we offer.

Working Conditions: We always adhere to Finnish working conditions and agreements. We support the well-being and endurance of our employees in various ways. We offer flexible working hours that accommodate the needs of our employees’ families. We create jobs in Finland, strengthening both economic and social well-being. Employees have the opportunity to participate extensively in the development of operations and in decision-making related to their work.

Work Safety: We ensure the safety of our employees and support their skills, well-being, equality, and the diversity of the workplace community.
